🌄 Ooty and Coonoor Trip Guide 2026: Toy Train, Pykara Waterfall, Tea Gardens and a Memorable South India Journey
✨ A Peaceful Journey in the Hills of South India (6-Mar-2026 & 21-May-2025)
Ooty, located between the beautiful hills of South India, is a hill station where the atmosphere changes as soon as you arrive. Cool air, greenery all around, tea gardens, peaceful lakes, and the small toy train passing through the mountains make this place very special. This trip was not just about travelling, but also about spending some peaceful time away from busy life. The best part was that if the trip is planned smartly, Ooty can also become quite budget friendly.
1. 🚂 How to Reach Ooty – Beginning of the Journey
The easiest way to reach Ooty is by taking a train till Coimbatore. If a direct train is not available, then you can reach Bangalore or Chennai first and from there easily travel to Ooty by bus or train. Many buses are available for Ooty from Chennai and Bangalore.
My train reached Coimbatore around 4 AM. From there, I changed the train and came to Mettupalayam. Then I took the toy train from there for Ooty. This journey was the most beautiful part of the entire trip. This train running between Mettupalayam and Ooty starts at 7:10 AM and reaches Ooty around 12 noon via Coonoor.
There were two types of coaches in the toy train – Second Seating and First Class. The fare for Second Seating was ₹295 and First Class was ₹600. During the journey, the train passed through many tunnels, mountain turns, and beautiful valleys. The slowly climbing train and the mountains and greenery visible outside made the entire journey very peaceful and memorable.
If someone does not want to travel the full route from Mettupalayam or does not get tickets, then the train can also be taken between Coonoor and Ooty or Ooty and Coonoor. Tatkal ticket option is also available here but only for Second Seating.
2. 🏨 Hotel Experience After Reaching Ooty
I reached Ooty around 12 noon. The railway station of Ooty is called Udagamandalam. From the station, I took an auto and went to my hotel named “Bike Select Sign Grand Ooty.” Earlier, I was planning to stay in a hostel, but the rent there was around ₹800-900. On EMT, I got this hotel for only ₹1115. Later, when I checked again, the same hotel price had increased to around ₹1500.
The room was quite good. Clean washroom, facilities like a hair dryer, and the best part was its common balcony. From this balcony built beside the restaurant area, the entire Ooty looked very beautiful. Sitting there in the evening and watching the sunset behind the mountains was a very peaceful experience.
3. 🌿 First Day – Exploring Local Places of Ooty
Around 1 PM, I got ready and started exploring Ooty. If someone is travelling alone, then many places in Ooty can easily be explored on foot. If you are with family or in a group, then taking an auto is a better option.
3.1. 🌸 Botanical Garden
First, I reached the Botanical Garden. The entry fee was ₹100. There were different types of plants, flowers, and many beautiful photo spots here. If someone is interested in botany, then many things can be seen here. Around one hour can easily be spent here peacefully.
3.2. 🚣 Ooty Market and Ooty Lake
After the Botanical Garden, I explored Ooty Market and then reached Ooty Lake. Boating is very famous here and if you are with friends or family, the fun becomes even better. Since I was alone, I did not do boating that day. The atmosphere around the lake was very good and relaxing.
3.3. 🌹 Rose Garden
The Rose Garden in Ooty is also very famous. But one thing I felt was that it is not necessary to visit every place just to complete a checklist. If the Botanical Garden is explored properly, many people skip the Rose Garden. Often people try to visit every place quickly after reaching a hill station, but enjoying some places peacefully feels much better.
3.4. 🌅 Evening Sunset
Around 6 PM, I returned to the hotel. The sunset visible from the balcony was removing all the tiredness of the day. The cool air and the slowly setting sun behind the mountains were making that moment very special.
4. 🚖 Second Day – Pykara, Pine Forest and Tea Gardens
If you have two days, then keeping the second day for the Pykara side is the best option. I booked a taxi to go there. By booking through the Savari app, this complete section cost around ₹2100-2200. If three-four people are together, then the expense becomes much lower.
4.1. 🛕 Murugan Temple
I started the second day from Murugan Temple. This temple is around 2 kilometers away from Ooty main market, but many people do not even know about it. The temple is dedicated to भगवान Murugan, also known as Kartikeya Bhagwan, and it has great importance among local people. The atmosphere of the temple felt very peaceful.
4.2. 🌊 Pykara Waterfall
Pykara Waterfall is around 25 kilometers away from Murugan Temple. After reaching there, vehicles need to be parked outside and then around half a kilometer has to be walked. During the walk, greenery and cool air can continuously be felt.
As soon as you reach near the waterfall, the loud sound of flowing water completely changes the atmosphere. Barricades were installed there for safety. The view at that time was so beautiful that the thought came to mind that this place would look even more beautiful during monsoon. Shooting of many movies has also happened here.
4.3. 🚤 Pykara Lake and Boating
Pykara Lake is around 2 kilometers away from Pykara Waterfall. Boating happens here. I was alone, but I met some other people there and did boating together with them. The peace around the lake and the mountain views looked very beautiful.
4.4. 🎬 Ninth Mile Shooting Point
After that, I reached Ninth Mile Shooting Point. After taking the ticket, around 5 minutes of walking is required. After reaching the top, mountains spread far away and an open view can be seen. This place is called a shooting point because many movies are shot here.
4.5. 🌲 Pine Forest
As soon as you enter Pine Forest, the entire atmosphere changes. The air coming between the tall trees and the peaceful environment give a very different experience. One needs to stay careful from monkeys here. A lake-like view is also visible nearby and horse riding option is also available.
4.6. 🍵 Tea Factory and Chocolate Factory
After that, I reached the Tea Factory where the complete process of tea packing could be seen. There was also a chance to taste tea here, but I did not like the taste much. Along with the factory, there was also a Chocolate Factory.
4.7. 🌱 Tea Garden
The atmosphere of the Tea Garden felt the most relaxing during the entire journey. Green tea leaves spread all around, cool mountain air, and peaceful surroundings made me feel like staying there for a long time. It is a very good place for couples and families to click photos. CCTV cameras were installed here and people were told not to pluck tea leaves.
5. 🚞 Third Day – A Peaceful and Beautiful Journey to Coonoor
If you have a third day, then Coonoor should definitely be visited. Ooty and Coonoor are within around 10 kilometers range and both places can easily be covered in the same trip.
There are two ways to reach Coonoor. The first is by toy train and the second is by cab or bike. By toy train, this journey takes around one and a quarter hours, during which big mountains, dense forests, and beautiful waterfalls can be seen throughout the route. By cab or bike, Coonoor can be reached in around 40 minutes.
Coonoor is a very beautiful hill station located between the Nilgiri Hills. The large tea plantations, cool weather, and peaceful atmosphere here are liked by many people. The atmosphere here feels slightly more peaceful compared to Ooty.
5.1. 📍 Dolphin’s Nose View Point
This is a very famous viewpoint of Coonoor from where valleys spread far away can be seen.
5.2. ⛰️ Lamb’s Rock
This place is also known for its nature views and the mountain scenery from here looks very beautiful.
5.3. 🌳 Sims Park
Because of the green surroundings and different types of plants, this place feels very peaceful.
5.4. 🌄 Ketti Valley
The deep valleys and greenery here attract many people.
5.5. 💧 Hidden Valley and Catherine Falls
These places around Coonoor are considered very special for nature lovers.
6. 🍽️ Food Experience in Ooty
There are many restaurants, hotels, and street food stalls in Ooty. Mostly South Indian food is easily available here, while North Indian food is available only at some places. The average food expense can be around ₹400-500 per person for one day.
7. ☁️ Best Time to Visit Ooty
Ooty is a hill station where people visit throughout the year because the weather here remains good almost all the time. The period from May-June till November is considered very good for travelling here.

9. ❤️ The Most Beautiful Part of This Trip
This journey of Ooty and Coonoor did not feel limited to just travelling. The cool air here, the slowly moving toy train, the peace of the pine forest, the greenery of the tea gardens, and the small moments spent between the mountains were making this journey very special.
Many times, the beauty of a place is not only in its views, but also in the peace that is felt while sitting quietly there for some time. This is the thing about Ooty and Coonoor that makes this journey worth remembering for a long time.
