New Railway Route Near Pune to Protect GMRT Scientific Interests

In a strategic move blending infrastructure development with scientific preservation, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a new railway route near Pune. This proposed realignment comes with the objective of safeguarding the operations of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), a globally renowned astronomical observatory located in Khodad, near Pune.

GMRT, operated by the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, is one of the world’s most powerful radio telescopes operating at meter wavelengths. The telescope plays a crucial role in cutting-edge astronomical research, including the study of galaxies, pulsars, and interstellar medium.

The initially proposed railway route posed the risk of electromagnetic interference, potentially compromising the telescope’s sensitivity and performance. Aware of the scientific significance of the GMRT, the Ministry of Railways has revised the alignment to minimize disruption. This new route will be planned in close coordination with NCRA scientists to ensure that the telescope’s operational environment remains undisturbed.

Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the government’s commitment to balanced development, stating that national progress should not come at the cost of scientific excellence. The new railway line will not only support regional connectivity around Pune but will also respect the critical technological setup of the GMRT, which requires a low-RF (radio frequency) environment.

This initiative demonstrates a forward-thinking approach by Indian Railways, where scientific research is being considered a national asset worth protecting.
