India Air Travel Growth

India’s Domestic Air Travel Sees 10.2% Growth in April 2025
India’s domestic air travel sector continues to soar in 2025, showing strong momentum in both passenger numbers and air travel booking trends. According to a report by ICRA, April 2025 witnessed a 10.2% year-on-year increase in domestic passenger traffic. Around 145.5 lakh passengers took to the skies within India, compared to 132 lakh in April 2024.
Though April’s numbers remained largely unchanged from March 2025, the overall rise reflects the growing demand for air travel across the country. While monthly growth was flat, the year-over-year jump showcases a consistent recovery and expansion in India’s aviation sector.
ICRA’s data also highlighted that airline capacity grew by 6.9% in April compared to the previous year. However, there was a 4.2% dip from March, hinting at a slight drop in available seat supply. Despite these fluctuations, airlines are expected to maintain a stable pricing environment going into FY2026.
For the full financial year 2024–25, domestic air travel recorded a total of approximately 1,653.8 lakh passengers — a 7.6% increase over the previous year and a solid 16.8% above pre-Covid figures from FY20. This points to a robust rebound and growing confidence in the Indian aviation industry.
International travel also showed a strong recovery. Indian airlines flew 338.6 lakh international passengers in FY25, marking a 14.1% increase year-on-year and a 49.4% jump compared to pre-pandemic levels. This dual recovery in both domestic and international markets signals a strong and resilient air travel industry in India.
Looking ahead, ICRA has maintained a “stable” outlook for the Indian aviation industry. Factors such as steady demand, manageable fuel costs, and controlled capacity planning are expected to support moderate growth. Domestic air traffic is projected to increase by 7–10% in FY2026, keeping the momentum intact.
In conclusion, India’s domestic air travel is not only recovering but also expanding steadily, driven by growing air travel booking activity, rising passenger confidence, and favorable industry dynamics. Travelers and airlines alike can look forward to a promising future in the skies.
