Gadag-Wadi Railway Line Inaugurated, Boosting North Karnataka Connectivity
On May 15, 2025, the inaugural train service on the Gadag-Wadi railway line commenced, marking a significant milestone in Karnataka’s transportation infrastructure. The 257 km line, with an estimated cost of ₹2,841.8 crore, aims to enhance connectivity in North Karnataka, particularly benefiting regions like Kushtagi and Hubballi.
The project’s roots trace back to 1911, when the Nizam of Hyderabad and the British Indian government first proposed the line. Despite initial surveys in 1998 and 2009, the project faced delays until it was included in the 2013-14 Railway Budget. Former MP Basavaraj Rayareddy played a pivotal role in reviving the initiative in 1996.
The first phase of the project includes a 56.1 km stretch from Talkal to Kushtagi, covering segments like Sangnal, Hanumapur, and Linganbandi. This section was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Railways, V Somanna, at Kushtagi station. The Karnataka government has contributed ₹489.9 crore to the project as of March 31, 2025.
The Gadag-Wadi line is being executed in phases, with the remaining 201 km under construction. The project is expected to be completed by March 2026, with the state and central governments sharing the cost equally. The line is anticipated to boost economic activities and provide a reliable mode of transportation for the local population.
The inauguration of this railway line has been met with enthusiasm from local residents and officials alike. Veeresh Bangarashettar, president of the Railway Horata Samiti, expressed joy over the commencement of services, highlighting the positive impact on the community.
As the Gadag-Wadi railway line progresses towards completion, it stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of government bodies and local leaders in enhancing regional connectivity and fostering economic growth.
