Australia Emerges as Top Study Destination for Indian Students Despite Rising Costs

Australia has solidified its position as the leading study destination for Indian students, overtaking traditional favorites like the United States and the United Kingdom. According to a March 2025 survey by IDP Education, 28% of Indian students selected Australia as their first choice, compared to 22% for the US and 21% for the UK .​

This preference persists despite significant increases in visa and tuition fees. In July 2024, the Australian government raised the student visa application fee from AUD 710 to AUD 1,600, a 125% hike . Additionally, stricter visa policies and reduced post-study work opportunities have been implemented .

Nevertheless, Indian students continue to be drawn to Australia due to its high-quality education system, with 15 universities ranked among the top 200 globally in the QS World University Rankings 2025 . Extended post-study work rights under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA) further enhance its appeal

Financial considerations remain a significant concern, with 66% of students citing cost as a major factor in their decision-making process . Despite this, the long-term benefits of studying in Australia, including quality education and career opportunities, continue to attract Indian students.
