ASEAN’s Single Visa Scheme by 2025: A Game Changer for Southeast Asia Travel

Thailand is leading a transformative tourism initiative that could redefine how travelers explore Southeast Asia. In a groundbreaking move, six countries—Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia—have joined forces to propose a “Six Countries, One Destination” tourism pact, aiming to introduce a single visa scheme by 2025.

This unified visa will allow tourists to travel across these ASEAN nations with a single application, eliminating the need for separate visas for each country. The idea is inspired by the Schengen model in Europe, and if successfully implemented, it could significantly boost regional tourism, especially among long-haul travelers from Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East.

Singapore has expressed strong support, seeing this as a step toward deeper integration and enhanced connectivity. The pact is expected to reduce travel barriers, increase multi-country tour packages, and simplify the travel experience—key factors in reviving post-pandemic tourism.

Thailand’s Tourism Authority is also focused on ensuring that the scheme benefits smaller tourism businesses and spreads tourism income beyond major cities.

With over 150 million travelers recorded across ASEAN in recent years, the single visa scheme holds immense potential to increase numbers even further.

As 2025 approaches, all eyes are on how this visionary policy unfolds—offering a seamless and richer experience for those eager to explore the cultural, culinary, and natural diversity of Southeast Asia. [Reference]
