Katra Kashmir Train Launch

Katra to Kashmir in 3 Hours – PM Modi Flags Off Vande Bharat Express
The long-awaited dream of seamless Katra to Kashmir rail travel is now a reality with the launch of the Vande Bharat Express by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, 2025. This high-speed train service marks a historic step forward in the Indian railway network, offering a swift, comfortable, and reliable connection between Jammu and Kashmir.
This monumental PM Modi train launch coincides with the successful completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project, a 272-kilometre engineering marvel that has revolutionized Kashmir rail connectivity. Designed for all-weather, year-round operation, the new Vande Bharat trains numbered 26401/02 and 26403/04 will run six days a week, slashing the travel time from Katra to Srinagar to under three hours.

What makes this journey even more remarkable is the integration of cutting-edge winter-proof technology, allowing trains to operate efficiently through Kashmir’s harsh and snowy winters. The introduction of Vande Bharat trains in this region will not only benefit locals but is also expected to significantly boost tourism and enhance the region’s economic development.
A crown jewel of the USBRL project is the world-renowned Chenab Bridge, now the highest railway arch bridge in the world. Stretching an impressive 1,315 meters in length and towering 359 meters above the Chenab River, it surpasses even the Eiffel Tower in height. Designed to endure wind speeds up to 260 km/h and with a life expectancy of over 120 years, the Chenab Bridge stands as a symbol of modern Indian engineering and resilience.
In addition, the project features the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. Combined with 943 other bridges and 36 tunnels, this infrastructure achievement significantly enhances regional transportation and connectivity.
This launch underlines the Indian government’s commitment to developing critical infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. With regular operations beginning on June 7, 2025, passengers and pilgrims can now enjoy a seamless, quick, and scenic journey between Katra and Srinagar.
The Katra to Kashmir Vande Bharat Express is more than just a new route it is a transformative leap in India’s mission to unify its regions through modern infrastructure. The success of the USBRL railway project will inspire future developments and establish Kashmir as a more accessible and connected destination.
